Up for sale is my 19th. Century French Cocus 6 key flute. This attractive instrument is in excellent condition, and full playing order. With the exception of one staggered crack repair in the back of the head (see photo 3) which is tidy, discreet, and fully stable, the rest of the flute is in pristine condition, with all parts present.
It is made from dark Cocuswood, with hallmarked Silver keys, and matching rings. The embouchure is beautifully cut, clean and crisp, as are the tone holes. It is clearly stamped "SOUCHET A PARIS" on the head.Further investigation of the key stamps from good authority tells us that the Hallmark of VJ is that of Vacquelin Julliot from La Couture Boussey. This company was created in 1860 by Nicolas Hilaire Vacquelin and his Brother In Law, L. Victor Julliot (1836 - 1901) Father of Djalma Julliot. The flute plays at A = 440 Hz. With the French slide all the way in, once warmed up for five minutes. Intonation is good for a period instrument, with the exception of the usual flat F#, needing venting from the F key to raise its pitch. This flute sounds rich, sweet and sonorous, with very good projection, giving it a strong, clear voice, and as such, is a joy to play.
I have now recorded a sound sample of this flute. Please follow the link below to hear it. The item "Antique Vintage Old Wooden Six Key Irish French Flute Souchet A Paris" is in sale since Thursday, October 3, 2019.
