This is the smallest size of the three standard Newhouse bear traps. The trap has offset jaws with exposed teeth even though the pan is clearly marked No.In the 4th photo, the 6 teeth can be seen to have been shortened and rounded. A VERY experienced trap collector informed me that this trap was used by a New York governmental agency(likely NY DEC) to capture and relocate troublesome bears during the mid portion of the last century.
The trap was certainly used and shows weathering from much time in the out of doors but is overall a nice showy specimen. Springs are still strong but the Oneida Community spring stamps have been all but obliterated. The chain has a forged link connecting two lengths of chain and the ring appears to be hand forged and forge welded. The item "Vintage Newhouse No. 50 Bear Trap Antique Old" is in sale since Monday, December 9, 2019.
