This is a fantastic and expressive Antique Vintage Old Mexican Modern Cubist Bird Oil Painting on canvas, by renowned Mexican modernist painter Gustavo Martinez b. This work depicts two birds, likely doves, depicted against a pitch-black nighttime sky, with a full moon looming above. Signed: "Gustavo Martinez" in the lower left corner. The birds and overall scene are rendered in the cubistic style that Martinez is well known for. This piece likely dates to the early 1960's. Approximately 18 1/4 x 24 1/4 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 17 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches.

Good condition for age, with some light scuffing to the canvas and minor scuffing and edge wear to the original period painted frame please see photos. Acquired in Orange County, California. Gustavo Martinez Palos is a Mexican painter born in Guadalajara on April 21, 1941. His work is inspired by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Picasso, Miro and Francisco Zuniga. Through the years he became a self-taught painter. His teachers and their brushstrokes and many shades of vibrant colors influenced the composition/form of his paintings on canvas. During the 60´s Gustavo met one of his biggest influences, Jose Maria Servin who promptly realized the young artist´s natural talent and encouraged him to continue studying under his watchful eye.

Martinez has gone through different stages where he has done originals and variations inspired by Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo, Picasso, Miro and Fernando Botero among others. He enjoys the careful work in detail, creating the handcrafted flavor which defines the folklore of Mexico.
